Under the direction of the Office Chief, the Senior Landscape Architect, Caltrans, the incumbent develops landscape architectural plans, special provisions and estimates and other support activities in connection with State transportation projects for the Design Branch of the Office of Landscape Architecture (OLA). Incumbent directs the work of OLA staff in landscape architectural project development activities. Supports landscape architecture programs that integrate the highway with the natural, built, and cultural environments in the district. Represents the Office of Landscape Architecture in project development teams with internal and external team members and in public engagement activities for complex transportation improvement projects.

Position located at 111 Grand Ave Oakland, Alameda County
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. The majority of the work performed will be in a climate-controlled office environment and within a work cubical or work area under artificial lighting. The incumbent may be asked to work outdoors conducting field reviews or collecting data. The incumbent would be exposed to loud noise, dust/dirt, uneven surfaces, airborne particles, extreme weather, elevation, the traveling public, and numerous environmental hazards including but not limited to snakes, bees, mosquitoes, ticks, scorpions, dogs, and poison oak. Travel, one day or overnight trips, may be required. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. • Experience with Caltrans project development process and knowledge of the requirements of working on complex transportation projects.
• Knowledge of plant materials appropriate for the San Francisco Bay Area, erosion control techniques, surface drainage, water quality protection methods, grading, irrigation design, planting design and Caltrans maintenance practices.
• Ability to develop project proposals, analyze situations accurately and take effective action using the principles landscape architecture and storm water design and the Department’s policies, programs objectives, and design standards.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work with interdisciplinary groups and the public, read complex roadway plans, prepare plans (CADD), specifications and estimates, reports, and correspondence.
• Facility with standard office software consisting of word processing, spreadsheets, and data bases.
